The name Nairobi comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "cool water". It is originally inhabited by the Maasai community of Kenya. When colonialist settled in Kenya, they embarked on the construction Kenya Uganda railway. They came to Nairobi and finally settled to declare it the Administrative Capital town of Kenya in 1899 then as a rail depot on the Kenya Uganda Railway. Nairobi town quickly grew becoming a favorite to Machakos as the capital of British East Africa in 1907 since it had abundant waters as its name suggest. After Kenya became independent in 1963, Nairobi became the capital city of the new Republic of Kenya.
