Africa regional blocks and important global marks

Africa is divided into 6 major regions by location. Amazingly, all important Longitudes and Latitudes are all found only in Africa. Read this post to have an indepth understanding of Africa by location.

Northern Africa

In the North is Northern Africa. It overlooks Europe and neighbors Middle East, Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea in the extreme North. It also neighbors Central Africa, Western Africa and Eastern Africa below it. The Sahara desert is also widely found in this region of Africa. Its predominantly fall under the Arab League nations. Its main economy is oil production.

  • The Prime Meridian - Greenwich meridian time (GMT) Longitude also passes through the Northern Western part of this region.
  • The Tropic of Cancer Latitude also passes through the North African region.

Western Africa

Western Africa nations neighbor Northern Africa to the North, Central Africa to the East and Atlantic Ocean to the Western Coast. Nigeria which is the most populous African Nation is found in this West Africa region. It also include islands in the Western African such as Cape Verde overlooking America to the extreme West.

  • Central Africa

    This is the central part of Africa which neighbors all the other regions of Africa except Indian Ocean Islands. Democratic Republic of Congo which is arguably the richest African country only matched by South Africa in terms of natural resource is found here. Democratic republic of Congo (DRC) has vast mineral resources including Gold, Uranium, Diamonds and other minerals while it has a rich Equatorial Forest called Congo Forest and one of the most potentially viable hydro electric power producing river in the world called River Congo. It has the potential to generate hydro electric power to sustain the entire Africa.

    Eastern Africa

    Eastern Africa neighbors North Africa, Central Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa. It also neighbors Indian Ocean in the East.

    Southern Africa

    In the extreme south is Southern Africa region neighboring Eastern Africa to the north, Atlantic Ocean to the west and Indian Ocean to the East. South Africa which for a long time was under Apatheid rule and a rich economy dominated by mineral resources such as gold is also found in this region of Africa. Kalahari desert is also found in this Southern region of Africa.

    Indian Ocean Island.

    These are islands mainly found in Indian Ocean overlooking India from Eastern Africa. The largest Island is Madagascar. Other Islands found in the Indian Ocean Islands include Seychelles, Mauritius and Comoros Islands.

    Africa Regional Economic Blocks also called as RECS

    Established in the 1991 in the so called Abuja treaty is the RECs - Regional Economic Communities that constitute the African Economic Community. The treaty provides the framework for continental economic integration. The Africa's Regional Economic Blocks are:

    AMU/UMA:

    The Arab Maghreb Union. It is allied to the north.

    ECOWAS:

    The Economic Community of West African States. It is allied to the Western African Nations.

    EAC:

    The East African Community. It is allied to the Eastern African Nations.

    IGAD:

    The Intergovernmental Authority on Development. It is allied to the Eastern African Nations.

    SADC:

    The Southern African Development Community. It is allied to the Southern African Nations.

    COMESA:

    The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. It is allied to the South African Nations.

    ECCAS:

    The Economic Community of Central African States. It is allied to the Central African Nations.

    CENSAD:

    The Community of Sahel-Saharan States. It is allied to the Northern African Nations.
